Coronavirus Update #04

Tuesday 24 March

Dear Fellow Member and Friends,

The announcement last night by the Prime Minister has brought forward plans we expected to be putting into place next week or the week after. The below is a summary of what is and will or will not be happening at the club as we know it today.

This may well change as government advice changes and if so, we will advise you again. I will not repeat things that I have previously said in notifications already sent.

SYC Cowes Week Challenge

Saturday 8 to 15 August 2020

Come and sail one of the clubs Sonars at Cowes week regatta in 2020.

Individual crew places, bare boat and skippered charters will be available to club members every day during the regatta.

Expanded Role for Coastwatch

The NCI lookout station on the western entrance to the harbour has, for a while, been able to respond to requests for inshore weather forecasts, radio checks, and AIS equipment checks on VHF Channel 65 (Call Sign 'Shoreham NCI').

Solent CG have now begun to request that calls to them for weather and radio checks are directed instead to NCI.

From April NCI Shoreham will join other south coast stations in broadcasting local weather conditions on Ch 65 at times to be announced.

Historic motor yacht club returns home

We are welcoming the return of a prestigious motor yacht club to Sussex Yacht Club.

Sussex Motor Yacht Club (SMYC), which was founded in 1907, has a colourful history of powerboat racing and early aviation. Past members have included royalty and celebrities such as Rudyard Kipling, Charlie Chaplin and Pink Floyd’s Rick Wright.

Once based here, SMYC moved to Brighton in the late 20th century and has been without a waterside base for the last 25 years.

Ship-shape Sailability

Thank you to everyone who joined Sussex Sailability for a busy morning recently getting everything ship-shape, preparing its specially adapted boats for storage over the winter months.

The hard-working team scrubbed, checked and de-rigged all 15 boats to make sure that everything was all ship-shape ready for next spring, when the charity begins sailing again.

Kevin Headon from Sussex Sailability said, “The autumn months bring a sharp drop in the temperatures of the water and the weather starts to turn.  For our sailors, who can’t necessarily move around to keep warm, this makes maintaining body heat very difficult – so we have to reluctantly finish sailing for the year.

Yachting Monthly Supports SYC

We are delighted that the UK's biggest Yachting magazine- Yachting Monthly - is adding its weighty support to the Door to Shore fundraising campaign by becoming our official media partner.  This is a tremendous coup for us and will significantly raise the profile of Door to Shore nationally.

You can help with donations, fundraising and by highlighting the campaign to people or organisations that you think may wish to give.

The ‘Door to Shore’ campaign aims to raise £538,000 which will allow the Yacht Club, in partnership with Sussex Sailability, to create a fully accessible centre of sailing excellence in Shoreham.

£3111 raised from 'Up the Creek' Raft Race

The final figure raised from our first charity raft race was a brilliant £3,111 profit.  Our grateful thanks to all our sponsors, donors of gifts and prizes and of course our resilient rafters who made the day such fun.

Next year's race will be on Sunday 23rd August and we will be looking for helpers, volunteers and of course sponsors and course entrants once again.

More details will be issued in the New Year, but please note the date in your diaries!
